Qatar has warned of ‘major threats’ to shipping in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, stressing that freedom of navigation through the narrow waterway is critical not only for the Gulf but for the global economy.

Speaking to Al Jazeera, Qatar’s Minister of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs HE Dr. Mohammed bin Abdulaziz bin Saleh Al Khulaifi said many countries believe an immediate solution is needed to ensure the safe movement of vessels through the strait, which Gulf states, including Qatar, rely on to transport oil and gas supplies to world markets.

His comments come after Iran threatened to target ships passing through the key maritime corridor amid escalating regional tensions.

Al Khulaifi said the security of the GCC carries global implications, warning that instability in the region could have far-reaching economic consequences.

“GCC security is not about just regional security, but about global security,” he said, adding that the ongoing conflict has already had an impact on global markets and requires engagement from countries around the world.

The minister said Doha maintains open channels of communication with the administration of Donald Trump and has urged all parties involved in the conflict to return to diplomacy.

“We believe there is no pathway for a sustainable and long-lasting solution other than returning back to the negotiating table,” he said.

Asked whether Qatar felt betrayed by Iran’s recent attacks — given Doha’s longstanding role mediating between Tehran and Western countries — Al Khulaifi acknowledged the surprise but reiterated that diplomacy remained the only viable path forward.

He also expressed concern over recent attacks on both military and civilian infrastructure across the region, warning that such actions could deepen the humanitarian and economic consequences of the conflict.

At the same time, Al Khulaifi praised Qatar’s security forces for intercepting incoming threats and commended the resilience shown by people living in the country.

“We’re extremely proud of our security services for intercepting every single missile and drone,” he said. “We’re also proud of the people living in Qatar, whether citizens or residents. They represent resilience and unity.”
